3rd Grade 9/25

Dear scholars, this week we will wrap up The Real Thief. Be ready to discuss socratically, understand new vocabulary, and participate in reader’s theatre! You will be formally assessed on your understanding of Subjects and Predicates and continue practicing narration and dictation. Please continue practicing The Children’s Hour. We should be committing a stanza to memory each week!

This week, we will continue adding and subtracting with renaming, including subtracting over a whole number with renaming over several places. We’ll also be practicing rounding to estimate for reasonable answers. Then, scholars will sharpen their skills of analysis with 2-step word problems!

This week in history we will discuss the Capitoline Triad, roman mythology, and the story of Aeneas and the Trojan War.

This week in science will continue to discuss traits that are helpful and harmful to an organism in a particular environment.

3rd Grade 9/18

ELA:  Scholars, this week we will continue learning about our character Gawain in The Real Thief! You will receive the poem The Children’s Hour and start becoming familiar with the stanzas. We will be continuing our review of subjects and predicates and further practice narrations and dictations. Thank you!

Math: Adding tens, hundreds and thousands, oh my! This week, scholars are diving deeper into place value by adding and subtracting numbers up to the thousands. Keep practicing mental math, and addition and subtraction fact fluency! This will help when solving larger problems.

Q. Why was the math book sad?            A. It had too many problems!

History: This week we begin our journey into Ancient Rome. We will learn about the geography of the Mediterranean region.

Science: This week we will continue discussing traits in various populations. There is a great video on polar bears on Thursday.

Scholars who attend school on campus, please don't forget to bring The Real Thief on Monday.

3rd Grade 9/11

Scholars, another week behind us; can you believe it? As we wrap up the book, be ready to present your knowledge of The Trumpet of the Swan in a formal, Socratic discussion held both in the classroom and online. We will be tackling new skills in grammar/writing and analyzing the Preamble this Freedom Week.

This week we continue to explore addition and subtraction with number models, estimation, and word problems. Actually, instead of the term “word problems,” I like to use the term “math stories.” Wouldn’t you rather listen to a story, than a problem? It’s all about a positive outlook!

This week is Freedom Week. We will be briefly discussing the Declaration of Independence, some of the famous Abolitionists, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the US Constitution.

This week we will continue to discuss traits. We will look at how traits vary within an organism. We will explore how an organism is affected physically and behaviorally by its environment.

For scholars that will be returning to brick and mortar, please don't forget to bring your school supplies on Thursday. Please bring back the canvas bag with materials, as well.

3rd Grade 9/4/2020

Hi scholars, we are wrapping up our study of the four kinds of sentences (.!?) You will have a quiz next Friday, the 11th. I’ve so delighted in reading The Trumpet of the Swan with you. Remember, you should practice reading independently every day! Please continue applying yourself during writing narrations and dictations and thank you for your beautiful poetry recitations!

This week, scholars will deepen their understanding of addition and subtraction by creating part-whole models and comparison models. Along with mental math, drawing models are another strategy scholars may use to solve math problems. Scholars should practice drawing models but will ultimately choose whatever strategy they prefer. This new strategy will require patience and practice, but your scholar will persevere!

In History this week your scholar will review and study for the end of unit assessment on World Rivers.

In Science, scholars will have a Cheetah data collection project, which will be due September 10.

All zooms are canceled for Tuesday, September 8. Teachers will be making final preparations for scholars who will be returning to campus. As a reminder, our campus return will be done in a phased approach. Scholars in 3rd grade, who opted to return to campus will do so on Thursday, September 17th.
